The Champion of Champions event happens every six years; the plan is that each of the previous winners comes back to compete with each other for the grand title of Champion of Champions.
The observant will wonder why the list of previous winners differs from the lineup for the 2025 Champion of Champions. Here are some reasons;
- The 2021 winner, Auroua Fireworks, decided not to compete.
- The 2020 championships were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- 2019 was supposed to be a Champion of Champions year, but only three previous winners chose to participate. Thus, the organisers decided to do one night as the Champion of Champions, which Selstar won and the other night as a regular competition, which 1st Galaxy won.
- The organisers decided to invite the previous Champion of Champions winner to defend their title, despite this not having happened before.
- Fully Fused takes its place as the highest scoring runner-up.
The organisers decided this was the best way forward for the championships. Next year will mark the start of a new cycle of competitions, culminating in another Champion of Champions in 2032.
Each night, three 10-minute displays are fired from Mount Batten breakwater in Plymouth Sound.
